We are specialists in antiquarian and rare books in the sciences, technology and medicine. Our web site features reference materials and collectible items of special interest to scholars and collectors interested in the role of scientific instruments in the history of science and technology.
Books about the microscope and microscopy are especially prominent, along with select works in the physical sciences, philosophy, social science, and other fields.
Those interested in scientific instruments as such might check out the splendid selection at
ars machina.
We started bookselling in 1973, offering historical works in psychology and philosophy under the name "De Anima Books." Avebury Books was adopted as our name in 1990, shortly before opening our used bookstore in Bowling Green, Ohio. Since 1993, we have been exclusively a mail-order and internet service.
The proprietor, Ryan D. Tweney, is Emeritus Professor of Psychology at Bowling Green State University and is known for his scholarly and scientific publications on the nature of scientific thinking, including a number of papers on Michael Faraday. While continuing to lecture, write, and publish on these topics, Tweney has lately been expanding his activities as a bookseller.
